Systems Administrator / Cyber – Mostly Remote

Global Engineering and Technology (GET) is seeking qualified applicants with a cybersecurity and systems administration background for the position of Systems Administrator in support of the United States Department of Energy’s cybersecurity program. This is a highly compensated, high-responsibility national security position that is central to our mission’s success.

In its majority, work will be performed remotely, from the employee’s place of residence. Pre-planned, paid travel to Amarillo, Texas, for on-site interaction, support, and training will be required as needed (average of 85% remote / 15% travel).

Duties:

  • Conduct functional and connectivity testing to ensure continuing operability.
  • Design group policies and access control lists to ensure compatibility with organizational standards, business rules, and needs.
  • Develop and document systems administration standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain baseline system security according to organizational policies.
  • Manage accounts, network rights, and access to systems and equipment.
  • Plan, execute, and verify data redundancy and system recovery procedures.
  • Install, update, and troubleshoot systems/servers.
  • Check system hardware availability, functionality, integrity, and efficiency.
  • Comply with organization systems administration standard operating procedures.
  • Manage system/server resources including performance, capacity, availability, serviceability, and recoverability.
  • Monitor and maintain system/server configuration.
  • Oversee installation, implementation, configuration, and support of system components.
  • Diagnose faulty system/server hardware.
  • Perform repairs on faulty system/server hardware.
  • Troubleshoot hardware/software interface and interoperability problems.

Requirements

Security Clearance:

This position requires a current DOE Q or DoD Top Secret security clearance.

Experience:

This position requires a minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience as a Systems Administrator supporting cybersecurity operations in a classified environment.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities (as demonstrated by technical expertise and certification):

  1. Documented experience utilizing Splunk ES and performing cybersecurity Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) in a related work role.
  2. Knowledge of computer networking concepts and protocols, and network security methodologies.
  3. Knowledge of cybersecurity and privacy principles.
  4. Knowledge of cyber threats and vulnerabilities.
  5. Knowledge of information technology (IT) security principles and methods (e.g., firewalls, demilitarized zones, encryption).
  6. Knowledge of local area and wide area networking principles and concepts including bandwidth management.
  7. Knowledge of measures or indicators of system performance and availability.
  8. Knowledge of performance tuning tools and techniques.
  9. Knowledge of server and client operating systems.
  10. Knowledge of systems administration concepts.
  11. Knowledge of organizational information technology (IT) user security policies (e.g., account creation, password rules, access control).
  12. Knowledge of system administration, network, and operating system hardening techniques.
  13. Knowledge of network security architecture concepts including topology, protocols, components, and principles (e.g., application of defense-in-depth).
  14. Knowledge of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) data security standards.
  15. Knowledge of transmission records (e.g., Bluetooth, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Infrared Networking (IR), Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi). paging, cellular, satellite dishes, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)), and jamming techniques that enable transmission of undesirable information, or prevent installed systems from operating correctly.
  16. Knowledge of systems engineering theories, concepts, and methods.
  17. Knowledge of system/server diagnostic tools and fault identification techniques.
  18. Knowledge of operating system command-line tools.
  19. Knowledge of network protocols such as TCP/IP, Dynamic Host Configuration, Domain Name System (DNS), and directory services.
  20. Skill in diagnosing connectivity problems.
  21. Skill in maintaining directory services. (e.g., Microsoft Active Directory, LDAP, etc.).
  22. Skill in using virtual machines. (e.g., Microsoft Hyper-V, VMWare vSphere, Citrix XenDesktop/Server, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, etc.).
  23. Skill in conducting system/server planning, management, and maintenance.
  24. Skill in correcting physical and technical problems that impact system/server performance.
  25. Skill in troubleshooting failed system components (i.e., servers)
  26. Skill in identifying and anticipating system/server performance, availability, capacity, or configuration problems.
  27. Skill in monitoring and optimizing system/server performance.
  28. Skill in recovering failed systems/servers. (e.g., recovery software, failover clusters, replication, etc.).
  29. Skill in operating system administration. (e.g., account maintenance, data backups, maintain system performance, install and configure new hardware/software).
  30. Ability to accurately define incidents, problems, and events in the trouble ticketing system.
  31. Ability to monitor measures or indicators of system performance and availability.
  32. Ability to apply cybersecurity and privacy principles to organizational requirements (relevant to confidentiality, integrity, availability, authentication, non-repudiation).

Highly sought-after skills:

  • Knowledge of Python for uses such as automating network device configuration and provisioning, monitoring and analyzing network traffic and performance, implementing network protocols and services, conducting network security assessments and vulnerability scans, developing network management tools and utilities, and integrating with network APIs
  • Knowledge of C++ for uses such as developing high-performance network applications and protocols, implementing low-level network drivers and interfaces, optimizing network performance through efficient memory management and processing, building robust and scalable network monitoring and analysis tools, and integrating with existing network infrastructure
  • Cisco Router Certification/s (CCNA, CCNP, CCIE, CCDA, CCDP, and CCAr)
