Payroll Accountant
The purpose of Zearn
The vital importance of learning math today is hard to understate, and yet today, it is common to think that only some are born to achieve in math. Math learning is often disparaged and feared (e.g. I’d rather go to the dentist than do algebra) or viewed as a special interest or luxury (e.g. if kids don’t have a passion for math that is okay, maybe they have a passion for pottery). We don’t look at learning to read the same way.
Here’s a bit more on the case for focusing on and improving our approach to math teaching and learning:
- Both the dreams of young people and the reality of jobs have changed dramatically over the last thirty years and more change is ahead. These changes have moved math success from optional to a necessity for the majority of jobs in OECD countries similar to literacy. But the way we educate children has not changed.
- Completing math courses (especially algebra) is the most important predictor of academic and career success and not completing them is a predictor of failure; yes, students who do not complete algebra have only a 20% chance of completing high school.
- Against this backdrop, the pandemic has had a very negative impact on K-12 math preparation and achievement. According to the Nation’s Report Card, the NAEP, American students lost at least 20 years of gains in math achievement during the years of disrupted learning.
Zearn exists to help create a world where all children love learning math.
Over the last decade, Zearn has been knocking down the dominoes needed to create a numeracy movement.
- Domino 1: Is a scalable solution to improve math teaching and learning even possible? We’ve found that adaptive software and elegant lessons can be scaled to dramatically improve math learning gains especially for students previously lowest scoring.
- Domino 2: Will educators see the value and adopt this? Thanks to thousands of dedicated and passionate educators, millions of students are accelerating their math learning using Zearn.
- Domino 3: Can we create adoption at scale? With districts and now whole states signing up for Zearn, we have shown that scaled adoption is possible.
- Domino 4: Can we change the hearts and minds of adults that impact a child’s learning to believe each and every child can achieve numeracy? Families, educators, administrators and policy makers have to believe that all kids can love to learn math and that additional, dynamic modes of learning are the best path to get there. This is the next and we believe final domino to establish a numeracy movement.
